While John Sumrall was Chief Deputy Marshal he had a part time position as a probation officer for the City Court. He assumed the duties of Bogalusa Marshal after Marshal Wayne Adams retired on March 1, 2014. He received an opinion from the Attorney General's office saying that serving these two positions would not cause any violation of state law.

Section 1113A(1)(a) prohibits a public servant or immediate family member from bidding on or entering into any contract, subcontract, or other transaction that is under the supervision or jurisdiction of the agency of such public servant.
