Advisory opinion request regarding whether the Ethics Code would prohibit newly elected, District 8 Representative Mike Johnson, from continuing to provide legal services to Louisiana Right to Life Educational Committee, Inc., once he takes office.
Facts:
Mr. Benjamin Clapper, the Executive Director of the Louisiana Right to Life Educational Committee, has provided that his organization has contracted to retain Mike Johnson as its "legal counsel and Regional Director for North Louisiana" since April 2, 2013. Mr. Johnson was elected State Representative for District 8 in the January 8, 2015 election.
Mr. Clapper stated that the Louisiana Right to Life Educational Committee employs registered lobbyist. Mr. Johnson has in the past provided legal opinion regarding lobbying matters for the Louisiana Right to Life Educational Committee.

Law:


La. R.S. 42:111E(1) states that no public servant, an no legal entity of which the public servant is an officer, director, trustee, partner, or employee, or in which such public servant has a substantial economic interest, shall receive or agree to receive any thing of economic value for assisting a person in a transaction or in an appearance in connection with a transaction with the agency of such public servant.

Recommendations:
Adopt the proposed advisory opinion.
