Cameron Buccola is currently an unpaid volunteer firefighter for the Eastside St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department. He inquired as to whether he may apply to be hired as a part-time paid employee with Eastside St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department, and, if so, if he could maintain his volunteer membership within the Eastside St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department.

La. R.S. 42:1113 prohibits public servants, their immediate family members, or legal entities in which they have a controlling interest, from entering into any contract, subcontract, or other transaction that is under the supervision or jurisdiction of the agency of such public servant.
La. R.S. 42:1123(35) provides for an exception allowing any volunteer fireman or uncompensated law enforcement officer or legal entity in which he has an interest to enter into a transaction with his agency as long as the fireman or law enforcement officer does not receive compensation, does not participate in the matter, and is not an agency head.
