On November 6, 2018, Chad Nugent was elected to the Jefferson Parish School Board - District 8. Jefferson Parish School Board has entered into a charter operating agreement with Discovery Health Sciences Foundation, Inc. ("Discovery") for the operation of Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy. Discovery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. As a result, matters pertaining to Discovery may come before the Jefferson Parish School Board for consideration.
Mr. Nugent's mother, Lynda Nugent Smith, serves as a Board Member for Discovery. Pursuant to Discovery's Articles of Incorporation, Ms. Smith does not receive any compensation for her service on the Discovery Board.

La. R.S. 42:1112B(1) provides that no public servant shall participate in a transaction involving the governmental entity in which, to his actual knowledge, any member of his immediate family has a substantial economic interest.
La. R.S. 42:1102(21) defines "substantial economic interest" to mean an economic interest which is of greater benefit to the public servant or other person that to a general class or group of person.
