RE:
Advisory Opinion request from Kellyn LaCour-Conant, M.Sc., a coastal research scientist with CPRA, as to her receipt of an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Facts:
The American Association for the Advancement of Science ("AAAS"), a non-profit organization, is the world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society which seeks to advance science, engineering, and innovation by enhancing communication between scientists and the public, promoting the responsible use of science in public policy, and fostering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ("STEM") education. To recognize scientists, engineers, authors, journalists, and public servants for significant contributions to science and the public's understanding of science, the AAAS sponsors multiple awards. The "If/Then Program," given in partnership with Lyda Hill Philanthropies, a philanthropy, voluntarism, and grant-making organization, seeks to further advance women in STEM by empowering current innovators and inspiring the next generation of girls to pursue STEM careers.

Kellyn LaCour-Conant is employed by the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority ("CPRA") as a Coastal Resources Scientist in the Planning and Research Division. Based on her excellence in the field of science and commitment to supporting women and girls in STEM, Ms. LaCour-Conant has been offered a $5,000 award by AAAS through the If/Then Program. In addition to the monetary award, she will participate as an If/Then Ambassador in a leadership summit, online forums, and media, classroom, and public programs for middle school girls. The award is not based on your employment or work with CPRA. AAAS has no contractual or financial relationship with your public agency.
