RE:
Request for an advisory opinion from Mr. Daryl Purpera concerning whether employees of the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's (LLA) Office may attend free events held by a vendor that are open to the public.
Facts:
Technology vendors host events that are free to all attendees, including the general public, with the only constraint on attendance being seating availability. The LLA is not associated with the events as a host. In some cases the vendors may be seeking a contractual, business, or financial relationship with the LLA Office. The public employees in the LLA Technology Department would like to take advantage of numerous training and informational events in order to keep abreast of the rapidly changing technology in auditing and agency support.

Law:
Section 1111A(1) of the Code prohibits a public servant from receiving any thing of economic value for the performance of their public duties other than the compensation and benefits that they are entitled to receive from their governmental employer.

Recommendations:
Adopt proposed advisory opinion

Assigned Attorney: Brent Durham
