RE: Advisory opinion request from Chief Mac Dickinson of the Harahan Police Department as to the appropriate use of campaign funds in connection with the purchase of a vehicle. Facts: According to Chief Dickinson's advisory opinion request he would like to know if it is acceptable to use approximately $3000 from his campaign funds to put towards the purchase of a vehicle. Since Chief Dickinson is currently serving his third year as the elected chief of police in Harahan, he would like to continue paying for the vehicle from a monthly car allowance from the City to cover the cost of the vehicle. Use of the vehicle outside work will be declared as personal or campaign use for tax purposes. Law: R.S. 18:1505.2I of the Campaign Finance Disclosure Act prohibits the use of campaign funds for any personal use unrelated to a political campaign or the holding of public office.
