Buchanan Street <br /> Suite 336 <br /> Lafayette, Louisiana 70501 <br /> Re: Docket No. 2026-074 <br /> Advisory Opinion <br /> Dear Mr. Eller: <br /> The Louisiana Board of Ethics, at its April 2, 2026 meeting, considered your advisory opinion <br /> request, as to whether the Code of Governmental Ethics (the"Code")permits you to run for office <br /> and while serving as an employee of the 151" Judicial District Court. <br /> FACTS PROVIDED <br /> You are a hearing officer employed by the 151h Judicial District Court. You are considering <br /> becoming a candidate for the position of district court judge. <br /> You would like to know whether you can seek election to judicial office while retaining your <br /> employment with the judicial district. <br /> ANALYSIS AND-CONCLUSION-- <br /> The Board concluded and instructed me to inform you that your campaign for state legislative <br /> office and service as a legislator does not pose an issue under the Code. However, you should be <br /> advised that this opinion request may present an issue associated with the Code of Judicial <br /> Conduct,which is under the jurisdiction of the Louisiana Supreme Court. The Board suggests that <br /> you contact that office regarding the application of those laws. A copy of your request and this <br /> opinion has been forwarded to the Louisiana Supreme Court. <br /> Changes to the facts as presented may result in a different application of the provisions of the <br /> Louisiana Code of Governmental Ethics.
