| Advisory opinion request regarding whether the Code of Governmental Ethics ("Ethics Code") would prohibit Jason Shelton, the brother-in-law of Christopher Smith, to the position of Chief of the Bossier City Fire Department while Christopher Smith serves as Councilman at Large for Bossier City. |

Christopher Smith has been a councilman for Bossier City since March of 2021. His wife's half-sister, Casey Wallace Shelton, is married to Jason Shelton. Jason Shelton has been employed with the Bossier City Fire Department since June of 1999 and currently holds the position of Administrative Assistant to the Chief. Mr. Shelton seeks to be appointed Fire Chief. The Mayor of Bossier City will be solely responsible for the promotion and appointment of Mr. Shelton to the position of Fire Chief. Bossier City Council has no role in the promotion or appointment.

La. R.S. 42:1102(13) defines "immediate family" as the term relates to a public servant to mean his children, the spouses of his children, his brothers and their spouses, his sisters and their spouses, his parents, his spouse, and the parents of his spouse.
